1. Talking About Tough News

In an era where information is at our fingertips, children, more than ever, are exposed to global events, including those that are traumatic or distressing. Kids might see or hear scary news. It’s good to talk with them in a simple, easy-to-understand way. Limiting their exposure to disturbing news and creating a safe, positive home environment where they can express their feelings and fears openly is key to protecting their emotional well-being. Remember, children take cues from their parents, so how we react to such news can significantly influence their perception and emotional response.

2. Listening and Talking:

Let your kids share their thoughts and feelings. Active listening and validating their emotions are powerful tools in helping them feel heard and understood.

3. Keeping a Routine:

Maintain a consistent routine, as it provides a sense of security and normalcy. Reassurance is also crucial – let them know that it’s normal to feel scared or confused, and that they’re not alone in these feelings.

4. Faith and Spiritual Practices:

Faith can be big comforts in tough times.

Praying Together: Sharing duas and teachings from Hadiths can be incredibly soothing. Duas for protection, peace, and resilience can be a part of your daily family practice.

لَّآ إِلَٰهَ إِلَّآ أَنتَ سُبْحَٰنَكَ إِنِّى كُنتُ مِنَ ٱلظَّٰلِمِينَ

La ilaaha illa anta subhanaka innee kuntu mina az-zalimeen

There is no deity except You; exalted are You. Indeed, I have been of the wrongdoers

(Surah Yunus, 87)

This Hadith can offer guidance and perspective, especially in nurturing resilience and patience: “Amazing is the affair of the believer, verily all of his affairs are good, and this is not for no one except the believer. If something of good/happiness befalls him he is grateful and that is good for him. If something of harm befalls him he is patient and that is good for him”

(Sahih Muslim).

5. Getting Help When You Need It

There’s no shame in seeking professional help if you feel your child is struggling more than what seems typical for their age. Mental health professionals can offer tailored guidance and support.

6. Joining Hands with Others

Lean on your community, be it your local mosque, school, or social groups. These networks can offer invaluable support, not just in sharing burdens but also in creating a sense of belonging and collective strength.

7. Promoting Positive Activities:

Keep your kids positively engaged with activities like arts and crafts, storytelling, or community service. These activities should align with your beliefs and values. Keep the conversations going, stay connected, and remember, you’re doing a great job!
